Taiwan, Vietnam, Palau: You had Corona firmly under control - until now

A year and a half after the outbreak of the Corona pandemic the small Pacific state of Palau reported its first corona case. Like many other neighbors, the archipelago quickly isolated itself at the beginning of the corona wave and closed its borders - despite massive consequences for the important tourism industry. Other states that were considered role models in the fight against the virus are now also caught. Taiwan, for example, where the number of infections has recently risen sharply.

The situation in southern Australia is similar. A lockdown has now been extended in Melbourne because the delta variant of the pathogen discovered in India is rampant there. Malaysia is also in lockdown due to rising new infections. More than 40 percent of the 2800 deaths died in May. Other countries in the region are also struggling with new sources of infection, including Thailand and Vietnam.
