Blocking of rail traffic south of Leipzig

Due to construction work in the south of Leipzig, train travelers will have to be prepared for longer travel times, train cancellations and replacement buses from this Monday on. The Leipzig-Zwickau and Leipzig-Borna-Geithain connections are primarily affected. The reason is the expansion of the Saxony-Franconian main line from Leipzig to Werdau for speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour as well as the modernization of the Borna train station including the renewal of bridges.

Initially, closures are planned between Neukieritzsch and Böhlen as well as Neukieritzsch and Geithain. According to Deutsche Bahn, they will last into September. Later there will be further closures between Treben-Lehma and Altenburg (July 24th to August 15th) and Lehndorf and Gößnitz (August 19th to September 2nd) in East Thuringia.

The construction work, including closures, will be bundled in the summer months, according to Deutsche Bahn, because fewer commuters use the trains and there is no school traffic during the holiday season. For the travelers, the journey times are sometimes considerably longer. The journey from Leipzig via Altenburg to Zwickau with the S5X will be extended by 45 minutes to around two hours, it said.
