Brandenburg's Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach expects a decision on the application for approval for the Tesla car plant in Grünheide near Berlin in the fourth quarter of this year. This applies “unless there are currently unforeseeable further reasons leading to a further delay,” said the SPD politician of the industry newspaper “Automobilwoche”.
“In the approval process, the principle of quality over speed clearly applies. The top priority is that the decision of the State Office for the Environment is ultimately legally secure. And the factory can only be opened once a positive approval decision has been made, ”Steinbach explained.
Tesla originally planned to start in July 2021 and is now planning to commission the car factory by the end of this year. At least 100.000 electric cars are to be manufactured there every year. The construction of the plant is already well advanced on the basis of partial permits. Steinbach considers a final veto by the State Environment Agency and a dismantling of the site to be virtually impossible: "This is not about the approval of a new nuclear power plant," he said.
