The companies that have developed Covid-19 vaccines, from Pfizer to Johnson & Johnson and Moderna to AstraZeneca are among the top 50 most innovative companies in the world, according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The top positions are still made by the American technology groups Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Tesla. Overall, pharmaceutical companies are strongly represented in the list, which only includes very large companies.
The list with the 50 most innovative companies has been published annually by the consulting firm BCH since 2005. This year, Pfizer was awarded “the innovation story of the year”, together with Moderna. Pfizer was able, together with BioNTec, to shorten the development of the vaccine to one year and to massively expand production capacities in the shortest possible time. Abbott Labs and Bosch, also in the top 50, are praised for developing corona tests in the shortest possible time.
Innovative = diverse
The pandemic has accelerated ongoing trends and highlighted the importance of innovation, according to the study. For 75 percent of the executives surveyed, innovation is now one of the three most important priorities within their company. This means an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the previous year.
The development shows that the management of the 50 most innovative companies tends to be more diverse in terms of gender and origin. But while it shows that new companies are more diverse than the largest 1.000 companies overall, there is no solid evidence that once they reach the top they increase their diversity. Boston Consulting concludes that while diversity leads to more innovation, innovative companies do not necessarily pay attention to an increase in diversity when recruiting. (apa)
